Department of Geographic and Environmental Sciences

Where geography, technology and real-world impact come together. Tackle climate change, urban growth and global development with GIS, remote sensing and hands-on research.

What is Geographic and Environmental Sciences?

Geography and environmental science is the study of how Earth’s natural systems and human societies interact – across space, place and time. At the University of Louisville, you’ll explore everything from climate, water and ecosystems to cities, migration and development, then bring those perspectives together with powerful geospatial technologies like GIS, remote sensing and spatial data science.

What makes our approach different is integration. You’ll learn to interpret environmental change, map and model complex systems and understand the social forces that shape communities and landscapes – a skill set that connects the natural sciences, social sciences and technology. And you’ll practice it on real problems: our students work directly with faculty on research projects, analyze real datasets and engage with community partners in Louisville and around the world.

Because nearly every field now runs on location data, that training travels. Our graduates step into careers in environmental management, urban planning, geospatial analysis, sustainability and beyond – equipped to understand the world in an integrated way and to help solve some of its most pressing environmental and societal challenges.

Career Prospects

Where Science Meets Solutions for Our Changing World

A Geographic and Environmental Sciences degree gives you more than knowledge of the natural world — it gives you the spatial reasoning, data analysis and systems thinking that governments, businesses and research institutions depend on to make decisions about land, resources, climate and communities. From GIS mapping and environmental consulting to urban planning, meteorology and sustainability strategy, this degree opens doors across some of the most consequential fields of the coming decade.

GES graduates work in federal and state agencies, environmental consulting firms, technology companies, urban planning offices, research institutions, nonprofits and the private sector. The skills you build here — analyzing spatial data, modeling environmental systems, understanding how human activity shapes physical landscapes — are skills that translate across industries and grow more valuable as the world grapples with climate change, resource scarcity and rapid urbanization.

You'll graduate with hands-on fieldwork experience, GIS technical skills and an interdisciplinary foundation that employers across five distinct tracks consistently seek. Our graduates turn their passion for place and planet into careers that map the future, protect natural systems and build more sustainable communities.
